Long before the concept of restaurants as we know them today, ancient civilizations had their own versions of public eateries. One of the earliest recorded instances comes from Ancient Egypt around 512 BC, where a public eating establishment served a single dish: a plate of cereal, wildfowl, and onions. This simple meal provided sustenance to workers who lacked cooking facilities at home, marking one of the first known instances of food being sold to the public.
Similarly, in Ancient Rome, establishments known as thermopolia offered ready-to-eat hot meals and drinks to customers. These places were especially popular among the lower classes who did not have kitchens in their homes. Archaeological excavations in Pompeii have uncovered numerous thermopolia, highlighting their significance in daily Roman life.
